Philippians 4.8
Finally,
brothers! whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good report, if
there is any virtue and if there is any praise: think about these
things! What does Paul say we should do, can we always do it?
Whatever is honorable, pure, true, just and lovely, we should think
about it.
When we look at this verse, we can see that it
is about something we should think about. That is. It is about our
mind (attitude). In ourselves we do not have all the qualities that
we see here that we actually need to have in order to be able to
think about all these things. It is not enough that we know what we
should do, it must necessarily be part of our nature that we do so.
It is about being pure, just as Jesus himself is pure, otherwise we
do not have the mind of Jesus Christ. If we are in Jesus, then the
things we are encouraged to cultivate and set our minds on are
something that is already in us. We can have the characteristics, the
nature without doing it. We can easily end up living in the nature of
old Adam, or the deception of our own self-righteousness, where we do
it just about as well as we can.
This is not about how
well we manage to do it. It is about us having to set our minds on
something. So it has a lot to do with the renewing of our minds. Paul
also says. We must let ourselves be renewed in our minds. We have all
tried to do all the good and God-pleasing things that we are told we
should do, but we have all had to admit that we cannot do what we are
told we should do. We are and will be helpless in ourselves, we are
powerless, without the possibility of improving ourselves.
What
do we do then?
We want to do good but we can't.
We must ask
God to renew our minds so that we no longer live in our old corrupt
minds, which only fill us with less value and inadequacy. We must ask
in faith and then we will also get the same mind if we don't already
have it. Paul says. Let your minds be renewed. Here is the very core.
A total renewal of mind. We sing in a verse. To be like Jesus. To be
like Jesus, that is my great desire, to be like Him. If we really
mean everything we go around saying and singing about. Is a new mind
essential?
Many have also dedicated themselves time and time
again to a new life with Jesus. They want to and mean it quite
honestly the moment they do it, but they quickly lose heart and sink
back into the old life and habits, which often come from them not
having yet experienced a transformation of mind. I would venture to
make that claim. Without a change of mind, we live a dead life, more
or less under the requirements of the law, which we cannot keep to
the letter.
We can also use the verse to check ourselves
whether we are in the mind of Jesus Christ or in our own.

8 Finally, dear brothers, I urge you to gather
your thoughts on what is true and noble, right and pure. Think about
what is worth loving and honoring; and look at what is noble and good
in other people.
Now do not think that this only applies to all
men, women should also submit to what the Word says in love.
The
Bible is for both sexes.
Amen
