DISAPPOINTMENT TURNED TO JOY
Read the context the verse refers to
Today’s chapter is John 11
John 11 – The Story of Lazarus
Mary and Martha were very disappointed that Jesus did not come immediately when they sent for him. Lazarus, their brother, was not only seriously ill, but died before Jesus arrived
Jesus had not forgotten Lazarus – Jesus does not forget us, even if circumstances indicate otherwise – REMEMBER THAT!
John 11:11
“Our friend Lazarus sleeps – now I will wake him up, said Jesus.
Lazarus was NOT forgotten by Jesus. You are NOT forgotten by Jesus with what you are in the middle of.... He knows you and loves you!
When Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been buried 4 days ago. Many were already gathered to comfort the sisters.
Martha goes to meet Jesus and says to him.
Verse 22. IF YOU HAD BEEN HERE…
Can you hear both the reproach and the hope in the midst of sorrow, in the midst of misfortune, in the midst of the situation?
When disappointment comes our way, it is easy to blame others or ourselves. It is difficult to deal with disappointment correctly, because we do not see what can come out of it.
Disappointment is often an emotional response to either our own mistake – or the mistake of others. In the worst case, disappointment leads us to fall off the path – to lose faith, and close contact with God.
We can read from the story that Jesus loved Martha and her sister Mary and their brother Lazarus. “The one you love is sick.” John 11:3.
Their expectation was that Jesus would hear them and come immediately and heal their brother. Disappointments come when we expect something that does not happen. But the unfortunate thing about it is that we do not always know if our friends or the other person knows what we expect.
FAILED EXPECTATIONS LEAD TO DISAPPOINTMENT!
Jesus did not come in time for their understanding, so when Martha meets Jesus, disappointment is expressed. She was not disappointed in Jesus, because he was a dear friend of the house, but she was disappointed that he did not come immediately and that the result of it was that her brother Lazarus died.
God can turn disappointment into JOY. Jesus uses disappointment here to show his power! He wants us to trust him in all situations. John 11:4 and 25.
When disappointments come, we either get stuck in disappointment, blame others, and rarely ourselves.
We can also choose to ask God how to move forward with our lives.
God wants us to move forward with our lives, and not get stuck in discouragement and disappointment.
amen
