ENVY and JEALOUSY
Today's chapter is. 1 Samuel 18
Read
the section verse refers to
1. Samuel 18:5-16
Jealousy
is a destructive emotion. It is almost like a kind of poison for a
person - even when a Christian is affected by it. It opens up sinful
thoughts and attitudes. Envy and Jealousy must therefore be stopped
as soon as possible, immediately when it appears in your and my life,
to avoid that feeling taking root in our lives.
King
Saul's jealousy and envy affected his thoughts so much that it ended
with bitterness and a damaged relationship with David. The problem
arose when people praised David more than King Saul
“SAUL
HAS KILLED THOUSANDS,
BUT DAVID HAS KILLED TENS OF
THOUSANDS.”
THIS WAS FAR FROM SAUL AND HE BECAME VERY ANGRY.
WHAT ON THE EARTH, HE THOUGHT, THEY ARE GIVING DAVID GREATER HONOR
THAN ME.
WHO KNOWS, MAYBE THEY WILL
MAKE HIM KING
INSTEAD
OF ME?
FROM THAT TIME, SAUL WAS ENVY OF DAVID AND HE LOOKED AT
HIM WRONGLY... 1 Samuel 18:7-9
King Saul became suspicious
and distrustful and began to look for signs that David was trying to
undermine his status and throne. Although Saul never found any sign
or proof of it, he was darkened in his thoughts by envy and jealousy.
Bitterness had crept into his thoughts and mind, so that he was even
willing to part with David to appease his thoughts and find peace of
mind.
We would never go as far as Saul, would we? Jealousy and
envy are powerful destructive emotions – They are so powerful that
if the opportunity were there, we might also destroy relationships or
have experienced it, or seen it in others?
That is why it
is so important to act quickly when envy and jealousy appear,
including in ourselves.
We must start by examining our motives
and feelings for others, and honestly admit them, and then distance
ourselves from them: Suspicion, bitterness, hostility, resentment or
anger. Envy and jealousy have many faces, believe me, unfortunately
also in Christians...
When we discover it in ourselves, we must
immediately bring it to God and surrender these feelings to Him.
These feelings do not fit into our lives as children of God, and must
be brought to Jesus,
“Love is patient and kind. Love is
never suspicious, boastful or proud. It is never boastful, selfish,
or rude. Love does not seek its own. It is not provoked, it does not
bear a grudge.” 1 Cor. 13:4-7
Abide in Jesus and His
life of love, and He will abide in you
amen
