THE EARLY CHURCH A NEW BEGINNING FOR CHRISTIANS
“Now
when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they
were uneducated and ordinary men, they marveled; for they knew that
they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).
The greatest
obstacle Jesus encountered among his followers was their preconceived
ideas. The disciples paid no attention to what Jesus said if it did
not fit their own ideas of what he should be. Right up until his
ascension, they continued to question him about the deliverance of
Israel from Roman rule.
It was only after ten days of
prayer and close fellowship in the presence of God that their
prejudices finally began to be replaced with the truth, and the
disciples were ready to hear what God was saying to them. This paved
the way for the incredible events of Pentecost.
Of course,
the church still faced many challenges, especially from local
religious leaders. Many of these leaders were just as determined to
silence the disciples as they had been with Jesus.
